Natural Dyes for Pysanky: A Ukrainian Easter Egg Workshop in Ottawa

  • Maker House Co. 987 Wellington Street West Ottawa, ON, K1Y 2Y1 Canada (map)

Learn the ancient art of Ukrainian Easter Egg decorating-- a sacred and meditative practice. Pysanky, as these eggs are known in Ukrainian, are made using the wax-resist "batik" method, in which designs are drawn or written onto the egg with beeswax, and then submerged in a series of dyebaths. Pysanky are often very intricate and include layers of meaning, imbued with symbols of protection and goodwill.

In this workshop, we'll be learning how to make pysanky using only natural materials!

Over the centuries the tradition of pysanka-making has travelled far and wide and developed in many different ways, with chemical dyes becoming the norm for decorating using bright synthetic colours.

In this workshop we'll use natural materials instead. Things you can find at home, in the kitchen and in your garden: locally sourced free-range eggs, beeswax candles, and plant (and animal) based dyes. The root of this humble and profoundly beautiful practice is the home, and in this workshop we'll be "bringing pysanky back home"!
